Record Win For RC Luxembourg

Rugby Club Luxembourg delivered a thumping 61-17 win over Berlin RC but discipline is still an issue.

RCL have begun the season relatively well, racking up six points in two games putting them fourth after the second round of matches.

The team was shuffled. Christian Olsen was brought in from the wing to number 8, while Federico Inciarta moved up from full-back to fly-half.

Up front, the power of Olsen combined with the ever-reliable James Wheeler to punch holes in the Berlin defence.

Half-backs, Inciarta and Leon Pelletier, combined guile and movement to unlock a patchy Berlin defence.

Berlin’s overall performance was disappointing. Their kicking game didn’t gain the same traction it had a week earlier at home to Hannover 78. That exposed the fairly predictable attack, which all too often failed to break the gain line.

Both teams looked as though they need to work on their fitness. But, in their defence, the first half went on for an extra 10 minutes. That’s a long time for big fellas who might reasonably expect to do no more than 50 or 60 in a game.

The game began in exciting fashion with both sides recognising the importance of this clash of the relegation candidates from the 2025-26 season.

The third of the early tries was scored by, man of the match, Leon Pelletier. He went on to score another in the first half and set up two more after the break.

However, the decisive moment came towards the end of the first half. Max Kenens ran more than 50 meters to deliver an impressive score creating a 29-12 half-time lead and a noticeable drop in Berlin’s confidence.

Berlin did manage two tries in the first half. The first was classic Berlin; recycling in the red zone and maintaining pressure under which RCL eventually buckled.

Berlin’s second try came while Olsen was serving time in the sin bin after a deliberate knock-on.

In the second half, RCL flew out of the blocks scoring an early try. That determination combined with Berlin’s fitness levels and missed tackles invited a procession of five more tries for Luxembourg.

Berlin came mighty close to a losing bonus point with a few minutes left on the clock. If they’d brought their replacements on a little sooner, they might well have got it.

Next up for Luxembourg is a trip to the recently reinforced RG Heidelberg squad. If RCL can keep all their players on the pitch they’ll be in with a shout.
